TAMI Learning Project – Supplement 2 – Multimedia Industry Awareness

Filed under: Assessments —— shortiie @ 6:53 pm

This project contains information on the multimedia industry I have covered definitions, skills, professions/industries and ways multimedia is used in these professions/industries and magazines.

1) What is Multimedia?

a. Locate three different definitions of multimedia.

b. Note the locations you found the information.

c. Use these three definitions as the basis and write your own definitions of multimedia.

  • Multimedia is media that utilizes a combination of different content forms. The term can be used as a noun (a medium with multiple content forms) or as an adjective describing a medium as having multiple content forms. The term is used in contrast to media which only utilize traditional forms of printed or hand-produced text and still graphics. In general, multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms. Multimedia is usually recorded and played, displayed or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices, but can also be part of a live performance. Multimedia (as an adjective) also describes electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia content. Multimedia is similar to traditional mixed media in fine art, but with a broader scope. The term “rich media” is synonymous for interactive multimedia. Hypermedia can be considered one particular multimedia application.

  • Multimedia is simply multiple forms of media integrated together. Media can be text, graphics, audio, animation, video, data, etc. An example of multimedia is a web page on the topic of Mozart that has text regarding the composer along with an audio file of some of his music and can even include a video of his music being played in a hall. Today, the word multimedia is used quite frequently, from DVD’s to CD ROMs to even a magazine that includes text and pictures.

  • The use of computers to present text, graphics, video, animation, and sound in an integrated way. Long touted as the future revolution in computing, multimedia applications were, until the mid-90s, uncommon due to the expensive hardware required. With increases in performance and decreases in price, however, multimedia is now commonplace. Nearly all PCs are capable of displaying video, though the resolution available depends on the power of the computer’s video adapter and CPU.

  • My definition of multimedia:

Multimedia can be used as a noun or an adjective. We use multimedia in our every day lives from accessing videos or photos on our computer, or even recording videos and taking photos. Multimedia is also used to create web pages by adding text, images or videos to the web page. Even creating CDs and DVDs is a form of multimedia.

2) Multimedia covers a lot of different skills and concepts. For example Animation and Audio.

a. Name at least four other skills or concepts that multimedia covers

b. Give two examples of products, companies or other items for each skill or concept you have named plus the two given as examples (animation and audio).

  • Animation: Is images used to entertain through a cartoon on TV or videos. These images can also be used in creative advertising.

  • Audio: Is manipulating voice or making music producing it onto a CD by using recording equipment, headphones or microphones many Radio studios or Recording studies are involved with audio.

  • Photography: Is used for many uses like capturing life’s moments, as a business where photographers are hired to take images with a camera at fashion shoots or to travel the world and take images of the sceneries or just what others peoples life’s are like, and then there are images printed in newspapers or magazines as a form of information or advertising.

  • Web Design: Can be used by many people and companies for advertising or posting information by putting content onto a webpage like text, images or videos.

  • Visual Arts: This is art via photography, drawing, painting, sketching or video. Many museums like to take in visual art or fine arts.

  • Graphic Design: Is creating images or symbols. Sometimes these images can be combines to make a presentation for advertising or just art. It can be used in magazines, web pages and advertisements. These images, symbols or even logos are all created by a computer programme like Photoshop.

3) Multimedia has a large number of uses. They are diverse and it is often used in places you would never expect.

a. Give two areas that multimedia is used within assist the profession or industry.

b. Explain how multimedia is used in that industry.

  • Multimedia is used very frequently in Music Production. Many things like sound effects, Microphones, Headphones, Amplifiers, computers and recording equipment are used.

  • Photography is a multimedia profession it is an industry that specialises in developing, printing and processing film into many different formats including motion pictures, still images and photographs. These images are captured with a camera and we need a computer to put the images onto for editing and/or printing or to just post onto a website.

4) Locate three magazines that deal with one or more aspects of multimedia.

a. These magazines may be in print or electronic in format.

b. They may include pod casts and other electronic forms.

c. When you have found them, explain what area or areas they cover within multimedia.

  • The National Geographic Magazine covers photography, digital imagery and video.
  • The Your TV Guide internet magazine covers advertising, tables, images and links.
  • The Better Photography magazine covers photography, images, printing and image manipulation.

5) Locate three jobs within the multimedia industry.

d. One from Western Australia,

e. One from anywhere else in Australia, and

f. One overseas position.
